      Hi Everyone, We are planning to remove the mast from Terra Linna for maintenance. It is planned at present, to do this on Thursday 21st May. Once removed all fittings will be checked and the mast recoated for the coming sailing season. If you wish to be involved and help could you please reply and we will get back to you.
      Cheers

      Thanks for coming along and assisting. It was a good day until we discovered the damage to the mast. See my response to fixing that here;

      Was the mast constructed with polyurethane glue ? I think the bow sprit was and it opened up a few years ago and I cleaned it out with a hacksaw blade and compressed air and filled it with epoxy glue and clamped it in its normal curve while the glue set !

      I will have to ask Andrew Denman about the adhesive used. I will do that today.

      The adhesive used was epoxy resin – WEST System 105 resin and hardener plus 403 (now 413) filler powder. Confirmed by Andrew Denman

      I was part of the crew when the gaff jaw broke. The gaff was only half way up when it snapped.
      Not sure what sort of tensions were applied to the top of the mast under these circumstances.

      Having been glued using West system, i would feel very confident that the glue didn’t fail.
      Also the de-lamination, as i saw it in the shed and as it appears in Bernies photos, looks a
      very clean split with no timber splinters,or old glue, stuck to the sides of the split.
      The split stops a few mm into the glued section at the bottom.
      It would almost suggest that this section of the mast never had glue applied and has opened up due to weathering.
      As the throat haul crane is screwed into this joint, without glue, may have exacerbated the problem
      by allowing ingress of moisture.
      A spline repair to a clean separation such as this, where the stresses have been released, would be
      a very strong repair.
      Cheers
      Ainesley
