Final Photogrammetry trial vessel-MV Shipright

The Ray Kemp designed MV Shipright was used as a final test in the MMAPSS Project to trial the Photogrammetry documentation, particularly highlighting the required vessel measurements of vessels we had written for use in the project. This identified a number of edits that needed to be made so the draft documentation could be used and modified in the project. Just a little bit about MV Shipright;

Ray Kemp designed Shipright as 42 ft Motor Launch. Built by Keven Argent to deck level in Devonport Tasmania. The then owner, Ken Levis completed and fitted out Shipright with a Devonport based joiner. She was launched in Devonport in 1993. Shipright is a heavily constructed Huon Pine carvel built motor launch. The frames are 4" X 3 " Huon Pine and the planks are 2" Huon Pine. She is fitted with 235 HP TMD 60 Volvo Penta Marine engine coupled to a TAMD60A marine gear box. She carries 1200 lts. of fuel and 800 lts of fresh water.

Shipright’s design is very similar, albeit smaller, to the Tasmanian Police Boat Vigilant. Most of Ray Kemps boats were designed and built at his Woodbridge yard and slip.

Soon after the launch Shipright was purchased by Garry Raymond of Mentone Victoria. Shipright served Garry as a cruising and amateur fishing boat. Shipright was moved to the Sandringham Yacht Club on the Mornington Peninsula Victoria. From the SYC Garry cruised Shipright to SA, and Sydney as well as the Victorian coastal area. After this he moored Shipright at the RYCT and for many years fished and cruised the East, Channel and SW Tasmania in Shipright. Since buying Shipright in 2014, Peter and Dallas Higgs have cruised Shipright in the Channel, Huon River and Hobart environs. They have plans to cruise the East Coast and SW Tasmania.

Shipright is well appointed in Huon Pine with a double V berth, Shower and Head, large Pilot Wheelhouse and a large galley/saloon.

Shipright, at the time of writing, has been in 3 Australian Wooden Boat Festivals, 3 Kettering Wooden Boat Rallies and was awarded the best wooden Boat in a Victorian Wooden Boat show when owned by Garry Raymond. Shipright has also been in 4 Hobart Season Openings on the Derwent River and in 2020 was awarded Best Presented Vessel by the then Governor of Tasmania, Professor the Honourable Kate Warner, AC.
